The Oregon Foster Youth Connection (OFYC) is comprised of young people between 15-25 years of age who have personal experience in the foster care system and an interest in strengthening the policies that governed their experiences.
The purpose of this group is to combine their first-hand experience with advocacy training and best practices research, to educate lawmakers, adminstrators and the community about the unique issues facing foster youth. OFYC will advocate for policies and programs that improve the quality of life for foster children and raise the profile of foster care as an issue of importance in the general public.
What do OFYC members do?
- Meet monthly to discuss, create, coordinate and plan
- Form actionable recommendations for improving foster care in both the short and long terms
- Learn and improve leadership and speaking skills
- Present actionable recommendations to the Oregon Department of Human Services, State and Federal legislators, government officials, policy makers, the media and local citizens
- Monitor legislation that has an impact on foster youth
- Network with state and national organizations that are working to improve the foster care system
- Represent the youth voice on state committees, taskforces and advisory councils
